In today’s climate within HMRC, VAT inspections often focus on one particular aspect of a business’ accounting system – the days of general reviews are mainly in the past.
This means, for example, that HMRC may visit a car trader and only review the VAT treatment of e.g. demonstrator cars. There could be many other aspects of the accounting system that are left untouched – meaning a business could be making long terms errors of principle, or overpaying VAT each quarter.
